Terms of Service.

Effective 2026-05-12
Draft pending attorney review. This page is substantive but not legally final. The version that ships at launch will be reviewed and signed off by a licensed healthcare attorney.

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the products Laymen, Inc. (“Laymen”, “we”) provides at laymen.com, laymenterms.com, and any related applications. By using the products, you agree to these Terms.

1. The product, briefly

  • Laymen Terms — a free, public Q&A surface that summarizes peer-reviewed sources. Anonymous use is rate-limited; signing in raises the rate.
  • Laymen Baseline — a paid subscription that personalizes the answers against the health graph you populate.
  • Laymen Genome — a future add-on for deeper genetic context.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to use Laymen. By creating an account you represent that you meet that requirement.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use Laymen as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. See our Medical Disclaimer for the long form.
  • Misrepresent who you are, or submit health information that belongs to someone else without their consent.
  • Attempt to extract specific prescription dosing for yourself or others, attempt to use Laymen to plan self-harm or harm to others, or attempt to bypass the safety guardrails.
  • Scrape, mirror, or republish Laymen content at scale, train competing models on Laymen output, or use the service in any automated way without prior written permission.
  • Interfere with the operation of the service — rate-limit evasion, denial-of-service attempts, account fraud.

4. Your content

Anything you enter into your health graph (conditions, medications, vitals, lab results, symptom logs) belongs to you. You grant Laymen a license to process it strictly to provide the service to you. We do not train models on your personal health graph and we do not share it with third parties except as described in the Privacy Policy.

5. Subscription terms

  • Baseline subscription terms, trial terms, renewal timing, and cancellation steps are shown before checkout. You can cancel active subscriptions from billing settings.
  • Genome is not generally available yet. Any reserve list is not a subscription unless a checkout flow clearly says otherwise.
  • We honor refunds within 14 days of the first paid charge for any reason. After that, refunds are handled case by case.
  • We may change pricing for future purchases with at least 30 days’ notice when the change affects an active paid subscription.

6. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent allowed by applicable law, Laymen and its affiliates, directors, officers, employees, and contractors are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages — including damages for loss of profits, data, goodwill, or other intangible losses — that result from your use of (or inability to use) the service. Our total cumulative liability is limited to the amount you have paid Laymen in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim, and in no event more than $1,000.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, including liability for gross negligence or willful misconduct.

7. Termination

You can close your account at any time from Settings → Data → Delete account. We may suspend or terminate access if you breach these Terms or use the service in a way that creates risk for you or others; we will give you reasonable notice unless doing so would compromise an active investigation or the safety of others.

8. Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that cannot be resolved through good-faith communication will be brought in the state or federal courts in San Francisco, California, and we both consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts. Nothing here prevents either party from seeking injunctive relief for intellectual-property infringement in any court of competent jurisdiction.

9. Changes

We will notify you by email at least 30 days before any material change to these Terms takes effect. Continued use after the effective date means you accept the change.
